Bible Reading Plan: July 12-18

We invite you to join us in reading through the Bible together.  We're not trying to complete it in a limited time frame like a month or a year; but rather, we want to create a habit (or discipline) of getting to know God's heart through what He's told us about Himself.

We start this week in the Book of Joshua – it records Israel’s transition from a wandering people to a covenant nation under Joshua after Moses’ death. It highlights God’s  faithfulness where God teaches His people blessings that come through faith and obedience. Joshua foreshadows Jesus Christ, who leads believers into the eternal inheritance and rest.

When reading, ask yourself the following questions:
  • What does it say about God?
  • What does it say to/about me?
  • What can I learn from this reading?
  • July 12, Sun Let us worship God with a contrite and upright heart
Prov 4: 6-9 ‘wisdom will guard, give insight, exalt and honor you …’
  • July 13, Mon Pray for NVBC – that the next few months would be stable
Joshua 8: 1-17 After all that happened in chp 7, how important is “Do not fear and do not be dismayed.” (vs 1 a)? God instructs Joshua to plan an ambush – a military strategic move. God always plans, has a way of doing things – in your life and ministry, do you? Do you have a plan / strategy that comes with God’s wisdom?
  • July 14, Tues Pray that God would reveal God’s plan for the next few years
Joshua 8: 18-29 Often we miss / forget the brutality – 12,000 “men and women” (vs 25); it is safe to presume, children too! As much for people of the Christian faith we accept it as “God’s will” for His purpose, we should also be aware that people who are not of Christian faith find this troubling.
  • July 15, Wed Pray that NVBC would be a people who practice gratitude
Joshua 8: 30-35 “an altar” – it is typical that God’s people practice gratitude and worship. Today, our gratitude is often limited and expressed in words and feelings. Does God deserve more than that ‘which cost us nothing’? [cf. 2 Samuel 24: 23-25]
  • July 16, Thur Pray for a habit that enquires and asks of God for wisdom
Joshua 9: 1-15 vs 14 is the key verse: “… but did not ask counsel from the LORD”. Joshua made a covenant with Gibeon to let the people live in peace, probably out of the kindness of his heart. Do you let your emotions rule your decisions? How good are you in making decisions that go against your kind feelings?
  • July 17, Fri Satan is also at work, and crafty too (2 Cor. 11: 14, I Peter 5:8)
Joshua 9: 16-27 When the bluff was discovered, notice verse 20 – there are consequences that one must accept that are because of unwise decisions that are not approved by God, however kind and generous a person or however noble the motive was.
  • July 18, Sat Birthday: Caroline Kates
Joshua 10: 1-15 Politics live! 5 neighboring kinds decide to attack Gibeon. Notice some repeating phrases “I have given them into your hands” (vs 8), or “the LORD threw them into a panic …” (vs 10). God even threw hailstones and more people were killed by that (vs 11)
